For this piece, I made a clay sculpture of a turtle. I decided to make a turtle and put plastic bags through the shell to represent the amount of plastic in our oceans, and to show how it hurts the animals in our ocean. I started by making a giant ball of clay, for the shell, and I had to shape it and hollow it. I was not going to make the shell hollow at first but I then realized I had to somehow get an air pocket into the clay for it to go into the kiln. So I hollowed the shell and then added the head and legs. I cut holes into the shell in order for me to weave plastic bags into the shell to represent the plastic in the oceans. I think this is one of the best clay pieces that I’ve done because of what it represents but also because of how it was made.
